Supreme Court Orders Stray Dogs Be Sheltered and Removed from Delhi

Supreme Court's Order To Remove All Stray Dogs Triggers Heated Debate Online

Date: August 11, 2025
India’s Supreme Court issued a sweeping directive to capture, sterilize, immunize, and permanently shelter stray dogs from Delhi-NCR. In response to nearly 2,000 daily dog-bite incidents and rabies risk, authorities were ordered to capture 5,000 dogs from high-risk areas within 6–8 weeks. A helpline for bite reporting was also mandated. The court justified the measure in the interest of public safety, especially for children. While activists voiced concern, the SC warned of legal action against anyone obstructing the order.
